Employers added 165,000 jobs in October against 55,000 recorded beforehand, the Labor Department said on Friday, with August and September revised up by a combined 84,000 and unemployment a tenth lower. The rate regime, sixth on attention, had ETFs that edged up in price on Thursday, second of 22. Hiring this far above forecast, with revisions adding to it, removes the labor argument for skipping a December hike that Thursday's selloff had begun to price, leaving inflation as the case for a pause.

The Nasdaq 100 lost 1,807 points to 26,629.81 on Thursday, with Micron and AMD leading and the largest semiconductor index fund posting its worst day since March 2020, as investors weighed a Democratic Congress against the data center buildout. The AI compute core, third on attention, had ETFs among the four weakest narratives in price. The selling reprices how much of the buildout gets permitted and powered rather than any reported fall in chip orders, which puts more weight than usual on the next hyperscaler spending update.

Initial jobless claims fell by 6,000 to 189,000 in the week to October 31 against a survey forecast of 196,000, a 57-year low, while continuing claims rose 23,000 to 1.718 million. By capital, the rate regime is spread thinly across Treasury bill and core bond ETFs, the part of the market that held its price while equities fell on Thursday. Scarce layoffs beside a hiring beat leave the labor market showing no slack from either end, so the firing data now reinforces the payroll count rather than offsetting it.

The Labor Department said on Thursday that nonfarm productivity grew in the third quarter well above the survey forecast, with the second quarter revised higher, while unit labor costs fell against an expected rise. The productivity handoff, joint fourth on attention with the defense trade, still had ETFs that lost ground in price with software and security shares, sixteenth of 22. Output growing faster than pay is the condition under which strong growth need not feed inflation, and Friday's firmer hourly earnings are the first figure to press against it.

UK maritime authorities said a tanker was struck by two projectiles about 50 nautical miles north of Qatar late Wednesday, Iran said further tankers and a tugboat caught fire after hitting mines near the strait, and Brent settled at $98.29, up $3.67. Geopolitical supply, seventh on attention, had ETFs that slipped modestly in price, seventh of 22. A day after crude priced a political exit from the war the incidents put the cost back on the water, and only an Oman-brokered transit understanding would take it off again.

Airbnb reported third-quarter earnings of $3.16 a share after Thursday's close against $2.89 recorded beforehand, on revenue of $4.87bn, raised its full-year outlook and authorized a further $12bn of buybacks. By capital, the productivity handoff sits mostly in cybersecurity and software ETFs, which had already given up ground in price during the session. A consumer platform guiding higher on the day of an AI-led rout shows the demand side of the narrative moving apart from its compute side, and a payroll count this strong sits with the demand side.

Cloudflare reported third-quarter revenue of $782.5m after Thursday's close with non-GAAP earnings of 38 cents a share, said annualized revenue had passed $3bn, and guided to $845m to $846m for the fourth quarter. The AI compute core keeps most of its capital in broad technology and semiconductor ETFs, and those took one of the heaviest price falls of the session. Inference traffic at a network provider is a different reading from the chip orders that were sold, and results keeping the two apart weaken the stalling case.

Lam Research said on Thursday that its directors authorized $25bn of share repurchases on top of what remains of the prior authorization, and declared a quarterly dividend of 33 cents payable on January 6. Equipment makers sit inside the semiconductor ETFs that carry a meaningful slice of the narrative's capital, and those ETFs suffered the deepest price losses on the day. A repurchase of this size puts steady company demand under one supplier's shares, but it leaves the orders question behind the selloff with the chipmakers' customers.
