Eight things the Thursday session has to price

For session: Thu Oct 29, 2026

Lead story: rate regime

The Fed held its target range on Wednesday, with Governor Cook and Cleveland Fed President Hammack dissenting in favor of a quarter-point increase, and upgraded its description of activity to expanding at a strong pace. The rate regime, joint sixth on attention, had ETFs that slipped in price, nineteenth of 22, as long yields rose. Two votes for a hike at a hold turn the next move into a question of timing rather than direction, which gives Thursday's inflation figures more weight with the committee than any activity reading.

WTI settled at $102.78 and Brent at $115.32 after the Wall Street Journal reported Washington told Gulf states to prepare for renewed strikes on Iran after November 3, as US crude stocks fell 1.9 million barrels. Geopolitical supply, ninth on attention, saw its ETFs edge up in price, joint eleventh of 22. A plan dated past an election puts a calendar on the risk premium, and Tehran's reply to the Qatari draft is the nearest point at which it could be withdrawn.

Microsoft earned $4.89 a share excluding its OpenAI investment after Wednesday's close against $4.71 recorded beforehand, on revenue of $92.3bn, with Microsoft Cloud revenue at $63.9bn and Azure growing far faster than the company as a whole. The productivity handoff, fifth on attention, had ETFs that slipped in price, twentieth of 22, before the report. Cloud demand still accelerating gives the agent story a revenue line to point to, so the margin earned on that capacity, rather than its growth, becomes the figure the next quarter is read on.

Alphabet earned $2.12 a share after Wednesday's close against $2.94 recorded beforehand, $0.55 of the gap from an $8.7bn loss on equity holdings, on revenue of $127.6bn and quarterly capital spending of $51.4bn. The AI compute core, level with the rate regime on attention, had ETFs that rose strongly in price, second of 22, before the report. Spending of that size is demand for chips and power whatever the earnings line shows, so a cut to capital plans, not a miss from marked investments, is what would reach this narrative.

GE Vernova earned $4.81 a share before Wednesday's open against $4.03 recorded beforehand, on orders of $29.3bn, lifted its backlog to $197bn and raised full-year free cash flow guidance to $16bn to $17bn. The power constraint, joint twelfth on attention with the trade-war tax, had ETFs that edged up in price, joint thirteenth of 22. A backlog that grew $20bn in one quarter makes grid equipment the scheduling limit on new data centers, and the delivery slots the company commits to next show how binding that limit is.

Vertiv earned an adjusted $2.21 a share before Wednesday's open against $1.82 recorded beforehand, on net sales of $4.31bn, and raised full-year guidance to $7.10 to $7.20 a share. By capital the power constraint sits mostly in utility ETFs, led by one broad sector fund, and the session left them only slightly higher in price. Data center cooling and power gear is a different business from regulated generation, so a result this strong reaches the narrative's ETFs only as far as their weight outside utilities allows.

Phillips 66 earned $14.08 a share before Wednesday's open against $12.02 recorded beforehand, with its realized refining margin at $38.00 a barrel against $24.08 in the second quarter. By capital geopolitical supply sits mainly in broad energy sector ETFs, the largest well ahead of the rest, and their modest gain in price came before this result. Refiners earn on the gap between crude and fuel, so the product shortage behind this margin lifts the result while the same disruption raises the cost of each barrel they buy.

Ford earned an adjusted $0.49 a share after Wednesday's close against $0.39 recorded beforehand, on revenue of $49.5bn, raised the low end of full-year adjusted EBIT guidance to $10.5bn and lost $1.1bn in its electric vehicle unit. The reshoring trade sits twentieth on attention and its ETFs firmed a little in price on the day. Ford credited lower tariffs with offsetting pressure on its commercial unit, so the result leans on trade relief as much as on domestic production, and a change in that relief lands on the same line.
