WTI settled at $88.12, from $96.09 on Tuesday, and Brent at $94.62 after Democrats won the House and Senate, as traders bet a new Congress raises pressure to end the Iran war. Geopolitical supply, seventh on attention, had ETFs among the two weakest narratives in price on Wednesday, with the defense trade also lower. The move prices a political path to a settlement rather than any change at sea, so it stays exposed to whatever Tehran says next about the strait.

The ISM services index fell to 54.5 in October from 54.9, the figure recorded beforehand, with new orders down to 55.9 from 59.8 and prices paid still at 73.0. The productivity handoff, first on attention, had ETFs that rose modestly in price, thirteenth of 22. A slower services pace with prices still near their highs is the mix that keeps a December rate rise in view, which makes Friday's payrolls the next test of it.

ADP counted 86,000 private jobs in October against a survey forecast of 75,000, with September revised down to 86,000 and pay growth for job-stayers steady. The rate regime, fourth on attention, had ETFs that edged up in price on Wednesday. A steady private count beside Tuesday's firmer openings leaves less room for a soft official report on Friday to read as a turn in the labor market.

Treasury held next week's refunding at $125bn, raising about $28bn of new cash, and said the 7-year note will move from a monthly new issue to a quarterly one with two reopenings from March 2027. The refinancing cycle, fifteenth on attention, had ETFs among the two strongest in price as yields fell. Coupon sizes are held for several more quarters, so the change reshapes when the intermediate curve is supplied rather than how much, which leaves the 30-year sale on November 12 as the session that tests demand.

The Revolutionary Guard said early Wednesday that four tankers were burning after striking mines south of the strait and that two more vessels were detained, a claim not independently confirmed. Geopolitical supply ETFs still fell in price with crude, and the narrative holds seventh on attention. Tehran also called the US reply to its Hormuz plan unconvincing, with Qatar expecting feedback within 36 hours, so the oil move on Wednesday ran ahead of anything that changed at sea.

Qualcomm earned $2.17 a share on a non-GAAP basis after Wednesday's close against $2.16 recorded beforehand, on revenue of $10.3bn, and guided to $2.15 to $2.35 for the next quarter, a midpoint below forecasts. The AI compute core, fifth on attention, had ETFs that fell in price, seventeenth of 22. Handset revenue fell while automotive grew strongly, so the case rests on the data center ramp the company named rather than on phones.

A federal judge in New York declined to halt trading in single-stock perpetual futures but found the challengers likely to succeed in arguing that the contracts are swaps under the SEC rather than the CFTC. Pure narrative flow, eleventh on attention, had ETFs among the four strongest in price on Wednesday. The approval stands while a preliminary injunction is pending, so the listed alternative to daily leveraged ETFs now carries legal risk from its first week.

CVS Health said on Wednesday it intends to separate into two independent public companies in a transaction meant to be tax-free, with completion reported for 2028, and its shares fell sharply. The biology trade, seventeenth on attention, had ETFs among the five strongest in price on the day. A split that takes until 2028 hands health care ETFs a multi-year change in what one of their larger holdings is, before either company's terms are known.
